This fun and welcoming event is designed for players in Kindergarten–8th Grade. Whether your child is brand new to basketball or interested in seeing what it’s like to participate in YMCA basketball programs, this event is a great opportunity to get on the court.

Participants will learn basketball fundamentals including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and gameplay through engaging drills and activities led by YMCA staff. No experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome.

Beginner Leagues for boys and girls focus on skill development, teamwork and most of all, fun! The program stresses basic basketball fundamentals, concepts and learning the rules of the game. Teams are composed of no more than 12 players (six players per team play at the same time in a 3v3 format on side-by-side courts). All players get a team t-shirt. The season consists of three weeks of practice and seven weeks of games. Game times vary from week to week, and schedules and rosters will be sent via email one week prior to the start of the program. Team or coach requests are not guaranteed for late registrations after Oct 5.

Our instructional program for ages 5-9 leverages a fun approach to teaching basic fundamentals and skills using structured drills and game play. Our goal is to establish a foundation for success for all participants regardless of skill level or future aspirations in the sport.

Intermediate Leagues are designed for players with a firm grasp of the fundamentals and readiness for moderate competition. There are no tryouts or evaluations, and teams are established by school attendance area (play with your friends!) as much as possible, practice once a week and play one or two games on Friday nights or Saturdays in the Madison or Sun Prairie areas. WIAA rules and referees are used. The schedule includes 9-10 regular season games and an end-of-season tournament, and all players get a jersey.

YMCA Intermediate Leagues are good options for kids and families looking for a more moderate time commitment and minimal travel.

Get ready for the upcoming basketball season with the YMCA’s Preseason Basketball Academy! Designed for players in grades 5–8, this program is the perfect opportunity to develop skills, build confidence, and prepare for league play.

Participants will improve ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, defense, and overall basketball IQ through structured instruction, competitive drills, and game-based activities. Whether you’re new to basketball or looking to sharpen your skills before the upcoming season, this program provides a fun and supportive environment to learn and grow.

The Preseason Basketball Academy will meet once per week for seven weeks at the Sun Prairie YMCA branch. Each session includes 45-60 minutes of skill development and instruction followed by 15-30 minutes of competitive 3v3 gameplay, giving athletes the opportunity to apply what they learn in a game-like setting.

The Preseason Basketball Academy is the perfect way to improve skills, gain valuable game experience, and get ready for YMCA Basketball League competition.

Volunteers are needed to help create the best possible experience for every athlete! 🏀
